Middlesbrough is an industrialised town on the River Tees that has developed thanks to the South Durham coalfields and metal ores of the Cleveland Hills. A massive transporter bridge straddles the Tees, and is something of a local landmark. Before the process of industrialisation, the locality was comprised of several small villages, and it was in one of these unassuming communities that one James Cook was born. Visit the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Marton to learn more about Yorkshire’s celebrated seaman.
