My mum used this bus service the other day for travel from Darlington to Barnard Castle. She requested a return ticket, paid her money and sat down. Upon leaving the bus she asked the driver what time the last bus was and was told about 5.50 - 5.55. So near that time she went and waited for the bus. When he arrived (the same driver) my mum went to get back on and she presented her ticket. The driver refused to take the ticket saying it was a single. My mum said that she'd asked for a return. The driver then proceeded to argue with her. My mum said it didn't matter and that she would pay for a single ticket back to Darlington, which she did. Then just as she sat down, the driver called down the bus (in front of lots of passengers) and ordered her off the bus. She was shaking and quite upset. A friend advised her to call and complain to their head office, which she did. The manager said he would look into the matter and call her back. He never did. So about 4.50 my mum called back and was told by the manager that the driver had reported the incident and was terrified and near to tears; (bear in mind the driver was apparently a rather large burly man and my mum is a 5'2" 73 year-old-woman) that it was his word against hers, and insinuated they would take legal action if she persisted in calling them liars. All I can say is - no wonder the small businesses are being swallowed up by large companies like Stagecoach and Arriva. I will be highly surprised if Hodgson's are still in business in a years' time if they treat all their customers in this way.
