To the northwest of Osmotherly is the very attractive village Great Ayton, which is on the banks of the River Leven. This is the village where Captain James Cook lived as a child. The school he attended is now a museum in his honour, though the cottage where he lived has been transported to Australia (for the term of its natural life) and rebuilt there stone by stone. A monument to Cook stands on Easby Moor to the south.
Every year on Captain Cooks birthday (27th October) the town celebrates and the children in the village race their motor boats in the river.
The village is popular with adventurous walkers wishing to explore the nearby North Yorkshire Moors; this is better in the summer months when the blooming heather paints the hills in a beautiful purple colour.
