Pickering is the largest town in the eastern moors and makes a great base for exploring the region. The town’s history dates back almost three centuries BC, when a Celtic tribe settled in the area. According to legend the King of the tribe lost a ring, which was later found in the belly of a pike. This episode is said to have given the town its name and is recalled in its coat of arms.
Pickering had an early motte and bailey castle, which was built shortly after the Norman Conquest and fortified with a curtain wall in the early 14th century, which is the best-preserved part of the remains. From what is left of the King’s Tower you can enjoy far reaching views over the Vale of Pickering.
In the centre of the town you will find the Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life housed in a Grade II listed building, though Pickering’s major attraction has to be the North York Moors Railway, which makes its way under steam to Grosmont near Whitby and is a great way to see the eastern moors.
