Thornton-le-Dale lies a couple of miles to the west of Pickering and is a serious contender for the title of prettiest village in Yorkshire, where thatched stone cottages stand next to a picturesque stream.

The village was named the prettiest in Yorkshire at the beginning of the Tourism era in the 1920' sand 30's, it was then decided to name it a more classy 'Thornton-le-Dale.

Further west is the village of Brompton where the poet William Wordsworth married Mary Hutchinson in 1802.
