Whitby is the most charming of North England seaside resorts, it is full of meandering streets which lead the beautiful fishing harbour which is packed with colourful fishing boats. The River Esk flows into the North Sea at Whitby and splits the town in two, with St Mary’s Parish Church and the ruins of St. Hilda’s Abbey looming large over the town from the high east cliffs.
The town’s maritime heritage is renowned as all four of Captain Cook’s famous ships were built here and a replica of the HM Bark Endeavour recently sailed into the port. For more information on the famous voyager and explorer visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum.
Most of Whitby’s hotels and guesthouses are to the west of the town and the attractions are to the east, however there are two worthwhile museums on the west side that you should check-out; The Whitby Museum & Art Gallery in Pannett Park and the Life Boat Museum in Pier Road.

2009 marks the 250th anniversary of Scottish poet Robert Burns' birth. Burns was a poet and a lyricist and is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.
The Burns Supper was started a few years after his death by a group of his friends; they held the supper to honour and remember Burns. The tradition caught on and the ritual of Burns Supper is now held all around the world.
His life and work will be celebrated throughout the year at many Burns-related events.
