Northumberland Tyne & Wear Travel Guide

Angel of the North - © Sarah Saunders

The coal mining, steel and shipbuilding city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne has made a serious comeback in recent years, although much of the region has struggled with post war decline. Lying close to the Scottish border this has been a bloody region since Roman times and Hadrian’s Wall, which was the frontier for 400 years, is a legacy of this. North of the wall lies Northumberland National Park, with some challenging walking and activites. The Farne Islands have an extraordinary variety of birdlife and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is memorable but can be busy.
