Lying to the south of the locality of Berwick is Alnwick, pronounced Annick, the so called Heart of Northumberland, which was at one time the unofficial capital of northern England. Alnwick Castle dominates the town and has been seat of the powerful Percy family, Earls of Northumberland, since the 14th century. The Castle may well seem familiar, as it has featured in a number of films, most famously as Hogwart’s School in the Harry Potter films.

Alnwick Garden is a significant addition to the already charming castle, it is still undergoing work but visitors are still attracted to see its sheer scale. The gardens have water jets which do regular synchronized diplays, the beautiful rose garden is a particular favourite with many visitors.

Alnwick is an appealing town of cobbled streets and gorgeous Georgian Houses, it holds a small market in 'market place' every Thursdays and Saturdays. Other than catching the maket the best time to visit is durin the 'Alnwick Fair' which starts on the last Sunday in June, the fair is a medieval re-enactment which goes on for a week.
