To the east of Morpeth is the small mining town of Ashington in the Durham coalfield that was once known as the 'largest mining village in the world’. While all the pits have closed the town’s industrial heritage is remembered at the Woodhorn Colliery Museum.

Woodhorn Colliery Museum is set in the Queen Elizabeth II country park, it is the only coal-mining museum in all of Northumberland, it has various facilities and displays including an original pit building and social history displays.

Ashington’s other claim to fame is the clutch of world-class footballers it has produced; Jackie Milburn was born here, as were his famous nephews, the Charlton brothers.
