Bellingham is a small market town set on the north bank of the River Tyne among spectacular countryside, which makes an ideal base for walking holidays or enjoying the water-sports at Kielder Water.

The 12th century Church of St. Cuthbert testifies to the lawlessness of the area in the years of border strife as it has a stone vaulted roof designed to stop looting clans razing it to the ground. This era is covered in more detail at the Bellingham Heritage Centre.

Bellingham once had a thriving iron industry and supplied the metal work for the construction of the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle. Those days are now long gone and life moves at a much more leisurely pace.
