Wearside does not immediately spring to mind as a place of overwhelming historical or ecclesiastical significance, however, the Venerable Bede, who was otherwise known as the 'father of English history’, established a religious community at Monkwearmouth in Sunderland, during the 7th century, and the church that stands on the site today has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Close by is another big local attraction, the National Glass Centre.
