The Romans were first to establish a settlement here, and by Saxon times it was the site of a vast palace that belonged to the Northumbrian kings. Nearby is Conisbrough Castle, which was built by the Normans, and features a magnificent keep that is one of the country’s finest surviving medieval structures. In the early 18th century horse racing came to town, and the famous St. Ledger flat race is still held here. Other attractions include the Museum of South Yorkshire Life at Cusworth Hall, and the Dome, which is 'Europe's Largest Indoor Leisure Complex'.
