Doncaster was settled as far back as Roman times, when the Danum Fort sat by the River Don. Centuries later it was the seat of a palace belonging to the Northumbrian kings, which ultimately was destroyed by the invading Danes. In the middles ages Doncaster was a busy little market town, in 1204 it suffered a disastrous fire, being the middle ages all the buildings were made of wood so it was true devastation.

During the 16th and 17th Century Doncaster encountered the plague many times, each time the town lost a considerable amount of its population but it always recovered.

Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery is a 1960s purpose built museum that houses interesting collections of fine and decorative arts, along with those on local history & archaeology. The Regimental Museum for the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry is housed in an extension that was opened in 1987.
