Probably the most famous railway in Britain and consisently touted as the most beautiful, the line from Settle to Carlisle is a great testament to our erstwhile ancestors the Victorians, their passion for engineering and their Aristotlean devotion in overcoming the odds of their environment.
It took seven years to complete the 72 mile stretch and involved blasting fourteen tunnels and creating twenty viaducts, the most famous of which is the Ribblehead viaduct, cutting across wild, open moorland.
Sadly conditions were appalling and plenty of men lost their lives while others simply rotted in the shanty towns that grew up along its length.
