Settle sits in the shadow of Castleberg Crag, the largest limestone crop in Britain and marks the southern gateway into Ribblesdale. A glance around at the historic architecture of this attractive market town will confirm that is had its heyday in the 17th century. To see Settle at its bustling best visit on a Tuesday when the weekly market is in full swing.

The town is probably best known as the start point of the Settle – Carlisle Railway, which is undoubtedly the country’s most scenic line as it travels through the Yorkshire Dales, the Pennines and the Eden Valley.

Though the journey’s most spectacular landmark has to be the Ribblehead Viaduct, which conveys the line across the bogs of Batty Moss in the shadow of Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent, otherwise known as the Three Peaks.
