Swaledale is the most remote and rugged of the Yorkshire Dales, and few places in the country have been as unaffected by modernisation; lovely villages such as Keld, Thwaite, Muker and Reeth have changed little in the last few hundred years. The market town of Richmond is in the northeast corner of the Swaledale, and is dominated by the ruins of an ancient castle.
