Richmond is a unique, character-fuelled town that has barely changed in centuries. One of Britain's most rewarding visits, yet still relatively undiscovered by the mass of sightseers, wherever you end up exploring in this history book town, you will find stunning and ancient beauty.
Time spent shopping in the cobbled market place (said to be one of the largest in England) with the Church of the Holy Trinity rising from its centre, is a favourite past time in Richmond and a good central focal point for the town. From here a fine selection of Georgian architecture, old stone cottages, monuments and alleyways spill in every direction. Gaze to the heavens to be mystified; looming high over the town is the ruins of the epic Richmond Castle. Behind this, the fast flowing river Swale stands as a backdrop to the rest of the breathtaking scenery.
The atmosphere in Richmond has a contagious quality and has inspired painters and poets, past and present.
