With only local rail lines, train travel within the North Yorkshire Moors and coast area is limited. However, Scarborough can be reached easily, lying on the fringe of both the Leeds Metro and Midland Mainline systems, which have regular services to York. Whitby has several trains per day running across the North York Moors to Middlesbrough.

Intercity train connections to London and the rest of the UK can be made from either of the mainline stations at York or Darlington.

Journey times to Scarborough

  • To London King's Cross - 3 hours 20 mins approx
  • To Birmingham New Street - 3 hours 10 mins approx
  • To Edinburgh - 3 hours 40 mins approx
  • To Manchester Piccadilly - 2 hours 20 mins approx

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway provides around 18 miles of preserved steam railway running through the spectacular scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors between Grosmont and Pickering with stations at Pickering, Levisham, Newton Dale Halt, Goathland and Grossmont.

Trains also run on the Esk Valley Line, through the north of the National Park to Whitby, operated by Arriva Trains Northern.
