Thirsk is best known as the town where the real-life James Herriot, Alf Wright, had his veterinary practise. The surgery has now been transformed into the World of James Herriot Centre. Things have changed little since the time of the fabled vet, and this is still an extremely rural locality. The North York Moors National Park borders the town to the east, and some of the finest local views are from Sutton Bank.
