Harewood is to the northwest of Leeds; it is far more like the countryside surrounding the ancient city of York than the industrialised belt of West Yorkshire. The gorgeous stone village of Harewood was built around the grand house of the same name in the 18th century. The celebrated architect John Carr designed both the village and Harewood House, which is arguably the region’s finest stately home with only Castle Howard to compete for that distinction.

Harewood House is a showcase of celebrated designers’ work; designed by John Carr, embellished by Robert Adam, ornamented by Charles Barry, furnished by Thomas Chippendale and landscaped by Capability Brown. The interior is of an equally high specification and contains an impressive collection of Sevres and Chinese porcelain, instantly recognisable Renaissance artworks by artists such as Bellini and El Greco, along side paintings by Turner, Reynolds and Picasso with sculptures by Jacob Epstein. With a bird garden and adventure playground in the beautifully landscaped grounds, Harewood House really does offer something for everyone and is well worth a visit.
