To the east of Halifax is the extremely pretty hillside town of Hebden Bridge, which grew up around a 16th century bridge that was built to carry packhorses over the Heb. Like so many other local towns, it embraced the cotton industry and the valley floor filled with mills and row upon row of houses sprang up on the hillsides.

Hebden Bridge has seen alot of renovation in recent years. Traditional industries are no longer a major force, but buildings have been stone cleaned and revitalised.

A mile above Hebden Bridge is Heptonstall, which is little changed from its days as a 13th century weaving centre.
