Huddersfield is chiefly famous for its Wool production, which has been spun in and around the area for hundreds of years. First as part of a thriving cottage industry and then in the industrialised mills that sprang up during the industrial revolution.
For a bit of culture visit The Huddersfield Art Gallery, the museum successfully combines the traditional and contemporary art movements with classic works by artists like Turner and Gainsborough and modern sound and light installations such as 'the Origin of Painting'. The Huddersfied Contemporary Music Festival also offers entertainment for those who appreciate the more experimental end of the musical spectrum.
To the north is the Huddersfield suburb of Golcar, which is noteworthy for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it is home to the Colne Valley Museum and secondly it is the start point of the 12-mile Colne Valley Circular Walk, which is a fantastic way to get a feel for the countryside and character of this part of the Pennines.
