Carlisle is the Cumbrian capital, and dates from Roman times, when the area marked the northern reaches of the Roman Empire. The Roman walls are still in evidence today to the north of the city centre. The castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery are the most interesting attractions, but just strolling round the historic streets gives an insight into the city’s distinguished heritage.
