Carlisle is Cumbria’s capital and only city, which makes it a great centre for shopping, the arts and entertainment. It is a historic settlement that dates back when it was the Roman town, Luguvalium, at a time when the whole region was a buzz with the construction of Hadrian’s Wall.
One of your first stops in the city should be Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, which ably covers the history of Carlisle and boasts a surprisingly good collection of exhibits covering natural sciences, human history and decorative arts.
High Head Sculpture Valley is a family friendly contemporary art gallery and tearoom. It is on 70-acres of farmland and has a 5-acre area full of beauitful sculpture. The farm also has a hydrotherapy suite and spa, so there's something for all the family.
