This locality has two big draws: the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and some of the best remains of Hadrian’s Wall. As you might expect the locality is littered with Roman vestiges, though you will also find some fascinating Anglo-Saxon relics. Lanercoast Priory fell into ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, but was later restored as a Parish Church and features beautiful artwork by Sir Edward Burne-Jones.
