
Apart from the church, the gatehouse is all that is left of a 12th-century Augustinian priory, which was later strengthened following devastating raids by Robert the Bruce. The Dissolution of the Monasteries put an end to the priory in the mid-16th century. The gatehouse later served as a grammar school from 1624 to 1790.
