Northwich, like Nantwich, sits on the rock salt beds of Cheshire and has been a producing salt since Roman times. 'Wich' was the Anglo Saxon word for a salt manufacturing town and Northwich is indeed to the north of Nantwich, which explains how it came by its name.
This aspect of the town’s heritage is the focus of the Salt Museum and the Lion Salt Works, where they hold salt making demonstrations.A few miles south of the town is Vale Royal Abbey, which is the site of the largest Cistercian Abbey in the country.
Hidden from view until 1911 when the excavation process was started, all that had been visible was Vale Royal Great House. Bizarrely, for a site of such ecclesiastical significance, it has been converted into an exclusive golf club.
