Fancy flying to Chester Races? Manchester and Liverpool airports are closest. Liverpool Airport is under 10 miles from Chester, with budget and scheduled flights around the UK and Europe. Manchester Airport is a little over 30 miles away, with flights from around the world.
Travel to Cheshire by sea - the ports at either end of the M62 are the most convenient for ferry travel. The port of Hull is at the eastern end of the M62 with daily overnight ferries to Belgium and Holland. At the western end of the M62, Liverpool port has many ferry crossings a day into Dublin in the Republic of Ireland. Ferries also sail from Liverpool to Douglas in the Isle of Man.
Crewe Railway Station is significant in the history of the UK rail network. Famed for its locomotive works, it was decided in the early 1800's to make Crewe the major junction due to its convenient location at the centre of the Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham triangle. Although its importance has diminished as the UK rail network has developed, it still provides a major interchange between Wales, the north-west and the Midlands.
Drive to Cheshire - the historical town of Chester is on the M53, which runs from Wallasey via Birkenhead and Ellesmere Port. Many major roads, including the A55, A51, A41 and M56 circle Chester providing routes in all directions.
East of Chester, the towns of Winsford, Middlewich and Northwich are on the A54 and A556. Further east along the A534, A536 and A537, past the M6, are the towns of Macclesfield and Knutsford. South-east of Chester, Crewe and Nantwich are on the A51 and A534.
