Much of the local countryside is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the best way to discover it is on foot. Kendal is often referred to as the gateway to the Lakes, and is home to the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry, which is housed in a stable block of the splendid Abbott Hall. The ancient villages of Kirkby Lonsdale and Bourbon are well worth a visit, and both have a good number of historic sites.
