Kendal is known as, 'the auld grey town' due to the many grey limestone buildings that make up the town. This ancient market town is the southern gateway to the Lakes and its early prosperity was based on the wool trade introduced by Flemish weavers in the 14th century.
The scant ruins of Kendal Castle, one-time home of Henry VIII’s sixth wife, Catherine Parr, sit on a hill to the west of the town and are due for a bit of a spruce up thanks to a slice of lottery funding. Abbott Hall is a beautiful Georgian mansion and houses a lovely art gallery with an impressive collection of paintings and decorative arts fro the 18th century to the present day.
Kendal Brewery Arts Centre is home to two cinemas, a theatre a music room, exhibition spaces and a lovely restaurant and bar, make sure you take a look at whats showing in the theatre when your in the area.
