Lake Buttermere is one and a half miles long by three-quarters mile wide and you can walk all the way round the water’s edge. Red Pike looms over the lake and village of the same name and its peak at 2,479ft is one of the best vantage points in the whole Lake District, where you can see five lakes. A walk around the lake should take no more than a few hours.
To the northwest is the beautiful Crummock Water, which is often unjustifiably overlooked in favour of Buttermere. The lake has a great walk along its edge, which ends with the 125ft Scale Force.
Nearby is the compact village of Loweswater, which also pays host to a 4 mile walk. A welcome stop along the way is the Kirkstile Inn, serving welcome food and refreshments. Loweswater Lake is unique within the Lake District, it is the only lake that drains towards the center of Lakeland - to Crummock Water. You can hire rowing boats from the southeast side of the Lake at Watergate Farm.
