Patterdale is a lovely little Lakeland resort that is well placed for two of the area’s big draws; Ullswater and the most popular of the entire peak climbs, Helvellyn. It is said that St Patrick preached here and baptised his converts at a holy well, which still stands 1 mile north of the town.
Ambleside, Windermere, Keswick and Penrith are all very close by so using the lovely Patterdale village, as your base to explore the surrounding area would be ideal.
Helvellyn is the third highest peak in the lakes at 3,118ft and there are several routes to the summit. This climb is not for novice walkers or the faint-hearted and should really only be undertaken in clear, dry conditions. However, make it to the top and you will be rewarded with fantastic views of Lakeland, the Pennines and Scottish mountains to the north.
