To the north of the Eden Valley is its principal town, Appleby-in-Westmorland, which is a delightful medieval town that has not been swamped by tourism.
A castle stands at the top of Boroughgate and though it dates from the 11th century it was Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century, who created the luxurious mansion that stands today.
Events include a Gypsy Horse Fair and a Jazz Festival that are both held in the summer months. The Jazz festival is a three day event which aims to promote the creative talent thats in the country, there is a bar, restaurant, camp ground and car park available and the whole thing is based along side the River Eden.
