Ullswater is the Lake District’s second largest lake and has a dark, brooding atmosphere about it and many pretty villages scattered about its foreshore. For roughly half the year passenger boats traverse the lake linking the villages of Glenridding to the south with Pooley Bridge at the very north of Ullswater.
Much of the best walking is to be had east of the lake and a popular option is to catch a boat from Pooley Bridge to Howtown and then walk south to Glenridding, in time to catch the last ferry back to your start point. This route between Howton and Glenridding is reputed to have been a firm favourite with William Wordsworth.
If you prefer horse-back to walking then get in contact with Stockbridge Pony Trekking, they'll take all ages and abilities and you will be taken on a fantastic ride around the Lake, and through pretty narrow country lanes.
