Coniston Water lies in the south west of the Lake District, it is 5miles long and 184ft deep, making it the third largest lake in the area.

Despite its quiet atmosphere and beauty, Coniston Water is infamous as the scene of Donald Campbell’s death on January 4th 1967, when his record attempt ended in disaster as Bluebird somersaulted, and was destroyed. In March 2001 Bluebird was salvaged from the water, and a few months later Campbell’s body was recovered after 34 years.

The dramatic peak of the Old Man of Coniston, measuring 801m, overlooks the lake. The village itself grew up around the now defunct copper mining industry. Nowadays it reflects the tranquility of the neighbouring lake and makes for a quiet holiday base.
