Ormskirk in Lancashire is an old market town, which until about two hundred years ago was surrounded by waterlogged countryside. Once the waters of Lake Martinmere were drained the land proved to be good for growing cereal and vegetable crops.
Two miles from the town centre are the remains of 12th century Burscough Priory; since the dissolution of the monasteries the priory bells have hang in the town Church of St. Peter & St. Paul. Rufford Old Hall is one of the finest Tudor houses in Lancashire and is owned by the National Trust. It is renowned for the spectacular woodcarvings of the Great Hall and according to legend William Shakespeare once performed in the hall for Sir William Hesketh.
