George Holt began collecting paintings in the late 1860s, specialising in contemporary British art. He concentrated on moderately priced English landscapes and genre pieces. Following his move to Sudley House in 1884, he seems to have become much more familiar with the fashions of collecting and dedicated more time and care to his purchases.
