Liverpool, the city that gave us The Beatles, is a city of character, quirk and charm. Liverpudlians, or Scousers, are renowned for their cheeky wit and cocksure attitudes and are the but of plenty of jokes in Britain for their wily ways. But while nobody would deny the natives have a unique charm of their own, the city has done a lot to outgrow its old reputation.

Though less well known for it, Liverpool is an important city of arts and culture and it has numerous museums and art galleries including a branch of the Tate Gallery. In 2008 it will be the European Capital of Culture and in preparation it seems everywhere is getting a facelift - the tired centre is now smart and where there were once just seedy pubs there are now also continental cafes and bars.

  • Perhaps it is the city’s commitment to the arts that has spawned so many musicians, the most famous being the Beatles. The school Paul McCartney attended is now the Liverpool Institue for Performing Arts and boasts an impressive list of patrons including Lou Reed, Dame Judi Dench, Lord David Puttnam, Carly Simon and of course Macca himself.

Celebrate - The National Poet of Scotland

Robert Burns

2009 marks the 250th anniversary of Scottish poet Robert Burns' birth. Burns was a poet and a lyricist and is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.

The Burns Supper was started a few years after his death by a group of his friends; they held the supper to honour and remember Burns. The tradition caught on and the ritual of Burns Supper is now held all around the world.

His life and work will be celebrated throughout the year at many Burns-related events.
