The Metrolink tramway system runs around Manchester and the surrounding regions; it is owned by GMPTE with services operated by Serco Metrolink. Trams run throughout the Manchester city centre, through the suburbs, as far as Altrincham to the south and Bury to the north.

Trams run frequently, from early morning till late evening, so passengers can wait for the next tram with little need for a timetable. Metro link promise "fast, frequent and fully accessible travel around Greater Manchester, seven days a week, 364 days a year from early until late."

Piccadilly trams start before 6am and finish just before midnight.

Currently there are four routes in operation

  • Altrincham - Manchester City Centre - Bury
  • Altrincham - Manchester Piccadilly Rail Station
  • Bury - Manchester Piccadilly Rail Station
  • Eccles - Manchester Piccadilly Rail Station
  • Merseyside has plans for future tram services. Construction could start in 2004/05 with the first tram line opening in 2006/07.
