Set on the inland side of the high plateau next to the Antrim Glens, this is an area of Northern Ireland that most visitors pass by, either taking the scenic coastal route up the east coast or the main roads from Belfast up to Derry City.
With various places of historical and heritage interest and masses of outdoor activity possibilities, western County Antrim has a lot to offer those to have the time to visit. With high hills and the largest freshwater lake in the United Kingdom in the south of the area, it’s the perfect place to come for fishing, walking, cycling and horse riding.
Portglenone Forest and Slemish Mountain are environmentally protected areas, Slemish Mountain being prime outing ground for avid bird watchers hoping to spot the buzzards, wheaters and meadow pipits. On St Patrick’s Day each year there’s a pilgrimage to the top of the mountain.
