Islandmagee, the peninsula that creates Larne Lough, is accessible from Larne by ferry or by road from Whitehead. The peninsula has coastal walks, beautiful cliffs, a pretty sandy beach and Muck Island, Northern Ireland’s famous seabird nesting Colony Island.

There is a 2-mile scenic coastal walk from Whitehead that takes in the cliffs, caves and weaves its way up a steep staircase to Black Head lighthouse.

  • The quaint Brown’s Bay and nearby Portmuck harbour, at the north end of the peninsula, make for good holiday photographs and there are regular boat trips available to see Muck Island and its downy inhabitants and the Gobbins cliffs, once a tourist attraction with a walkway into the cliff face, that was later closed because of safety concerns.
