Newry is probably the best place to base yourself for exploring South Armagh (and South County Down). There are numerous outdoor attractions in the South of County Armagh, including many many areas of archeological interest; these areas provide great views, challenging walks and fantastic photo opportunities. See the tourist information centre website link below for more details.

  • Just west of Slieve of Gullion, in Mullaghbane, is the Thi Chulainn centre, which celebrates the Irish language, local folklore, traditional music and storytelling. Forkhill pubs, nearby, host traditional Irish music sessions on Tuesdays; and if you’re there in October, there’s a folk music festival.
