To drive to Dumfries the A74(M) busy main road from England to Scotland passes close to the town of Dumfries giving excellent road links to all of Scotland and England. The A75, off the A74, passes through Annan, Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart to the ferry terminal at Stranraer.

Gretna is on the B7076, clearly signposted from the A74.
