To travel by road from the south, follow the A75 from Gretna Green, through Dumfries & Galloway towards Stranraer. Just before Stranraer turn right onto A751 & then A77 to Cairnryan. From the north, the A77 coast road travels from Ayr & Glasgow directly to the port. All approaches are clearly signposted.
The lack of a train service to Cairnryan meant that the port didn't develop as quickly as its nearby neighbour Stranraer, approximately five miles away. Trains run to Stranraer Harbour from Glasgow, approximately two hours journey time, with some direct trains also from Carlisle, around a four hour journey.
National Express coaches travel to Stranraer, with direct coaches from Carlisle & Glasgow, both around two and a half hours away.
Local buses provide connections between Stranraer and Cairnryan.
