Dumfries is an attractive and ancient town that is sometimes known of as Queen of the South; indeed the professional football club play under that name.
Situated on the banks of the Nith a few miles from where it flows into the Solway Firth, the town boasts five bridges, the oldest of these being Devorgilla Bridge dating from 1426, which was named after Lady Devorgilla, who founded nearby Sweetheart Abbey and endowed Balliol College at Oxford in her husband’s memory.
Dumfries has a literary pedigree with Scotland's favourite poet Robert Burns having lived here and J.M. Barrie having lived and conceived of his most famous creation, Peter Pan, here.
The Burn's walk, along the banks of the Nith, is a lovely stroll. If you want to undertake some serious walking, progress further up the Nith Valley to places such as Thornhill or Sanquhar, which are on the coast to coast Southern Upland Way.
