Perth, once the nation’s capital, is still known for its high quality of life; industrial Dundee has some attractions, but nearby Angus is prettier; Aberdeen is a proud thriving oil city built almost entirely out of granite with some good beaches nearby. Inland, Braemar, host to the Highland Games, and Balmoral, retreat of the royals are of interest. For the whiskey connoisseuer, the Spey region in the north has several distilleries, home to some of Scotland's finest single malts, a lighter liquor than their peatier west coast counterparts.
