Glamis, to the north of Dundee, is the site of Glamis Castle, ancestral home of the Queen Mother’s family. Indeed, the Queen Mother spent her childhood here and her younger daughter, Margaret, was born here in 1930. Shakespeare gave Macbeth the title Thane of Glamis, though his Glamis Castle was said to be farther north near Burnham Wood in Inverness.

The fishing port of Arbroath was established in the 12th and 13th centuries and its Abbey was completed in 1233. 1320 marked an important episode in Scotland’s history for it was when the Declaration of Arbroath was made. A group of Scottish nobility asked that Pope John XXII reverse his ex-communication of Robert the Bruce and recognise him as the sovereign of an independent Scotland. The declaration was a moving and persuasive plea that convinced the Pope, who agreed to it in 1324:

  • Further north up the coast is Montrose, which is an ancient fishing port near a lagoon of mud, known as the Montrose Basin, which supports various wildlife. The Montrose Basin Wildlife Centre offers guided tours, bird-hides and equipment hire for nature spotting.
