Elgin 

Elgin dates from the 13th century and is the county capital and one of the busier towns in the region. You can get a feel for the old medieval town if you venture away from the main high street towards the old marketplace.

Elgin Cathedral was consecrated in 1224 and was once supposedly Scotland's finest, although it can be hard to imagine as sadly the years have taken their toll. It was famously burnt down in 1390, along with the rest of the town, by the legendary terror, the Wolf of Badenoch (aka the Earl of Buchan) in his fury at having been excommunicated by the Bishop of Moray for having left his wife for his mistress.

• The Old Watermills, which were a charter given by Malcolm II in 1010 AD, are being conserved. Go along and discover lots of old artefacts, it's all free and tools are provided.
