Resting against the picturesque views of a loch, Calanais' major attraction is the Calanais Standing Stones. Dating back to the Neolithic times (3000 to 1500 BC) these are the most outstanding prehistoric ruins on Lewis.
Most interesting about the Standing Stones is the contentious debate that is sparked as to their origin and function. All sorts of ideas have been covered over the years, such as alien intervention or human sacrifice!
Calanais itself is a small village and mainly based around its farming industry. It has a small tearoom adjacent to the main stone circle in the blackhouse; on the other side of the stones is a museum and restaurant.
