The most northerly British territories lie over 170-miles from the mainland, and are further north than parts of Alaska. This is a remote and place, and the winter months are passed mostly in darkness, while the summer months enjoy almost perpetual light; midnight golf is common in the Shetland Isles. There are Celtic and Scandinavian influences all over the islands, which is not surprising when you consider they were under Norwegian rule until the 15th century, and townsfolk dress up as Vikings to celebrate the Up-Helly-Aa fire festival each January.
